Former Cameroon defender Joel Matip, who joined Liverpool when his contract with Schalke expired in July 2016, is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season.Liverpool are working to secure a new centre-back and are set for a generational change in the final line.
Dutch defender Filsil van Dijk also has a contract until June 2025, with negotiations imminent to renew his contract this summer. And the departure of 26-year-old defender Joe Gomez, who has played at left-back this season and returned to the England squad, may also be worth watching.
According to Anfield Watch, the former Charlton defender is open to a new challenge and is willing to listen to offers if they are the right amount for the club. On the other hand, he has no intention of forcing a move and would be willing to stay at the club, where he is under contract until 2027.
He has also stated that if he does move on, his priority is to return to London, where he is from. If the England defender were to leave, it would certainly be a blow to Liverpool, who would face an uphill battle to find someone to fill the left and right flanks and centre-back positions.
He joined Liverpool in July 2015 and now that Jordan Henderson has left, he is the oldest player in the team, except for those from the academy. He is fourth in the pecking order as a centre-back, but is a reliable backup over the course of a long season.
He has played well over ‘200’ games at Anfield and has plenty of experience at the top level. At the moment, it is unlikely that Liverpool will allow the player to leave, but will the 26-year-old centre-back move on to a new journey…?
