Spanish goalkeeper Adrián, who became a free transfer in 2019, sought a new home at Anfield. When he first joined, he was given the second-choice goalkeeper role, but due to the rise of Caoimhin Kelleher, he was demoted to third choice, taking on the role of big brother to the goalkeepers and standing in as a moral support rather than a player on the pitch.
However, his contract runs until the end of the season. Liverpool have not made any moves to renew his contract and he is expected to leave the club.
The Daily Mail reports that the Reds are interested in former England goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, whose contract with Southampton expires at the end of the season, as a replacement for the player who is said to want to return to Spain.
The 34-year-old Guildford-born goalkeeper has made a total of 145 appearances for the south of England club. He has a lot of experience in the Premier League and the Championship, having played for various clubs such as Reading, Brentford, Leeds United and Crystal Palace.
He has to be seen as a bit of a lacklustre backup to Alisson Becker. With the departure of the Irish goalkeeper uncertain, a roll like Adrian’s should be expected rather than playing in games where the Brazilian goalkeeper is unavailable.
So will the veteran goalkeeper be playing on the Anfield pitch next season…?
