22-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg has been on loan since joining Liverpool. After a spell in the Champinship, he has spent the last two seasons in the Bundesliga.
This season he has been a regular at Mainz and has developed into one of the most promising players in Europe.
The appointment of another Dutch coach, Arne Slot, was expected to give him a chance in pre-season, but the player is keen to remain at Mainz and talks have started between the two clubs for a complete transfer, according to German Sky Sport Germany Sky Sport Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg reported.

He could fill Joel Matip’s shoes, but as he is unlikely to surpass the likes of France defender Ibrahima Konate and England defender Jarell Quansah, a club where he could play every week would be attractive.
The question is whether Liverpool will be able to pay the fee they are demanding. Will the Dutch defender end up playing for the club of his choice?
