England international Anthony Gordon, who also participated in EURO 2024, was linked with a move to Liverpool during the tournament.
Negotiations did not move forward as Newcastle were not willing to let him go easily, demanding a hefty transfer fee and asking for 21-year-old defender Jarell Quansah in exchange for a reduced price.
Liverpool are nevertheless aiming to strengthen their attackers, whose scoring rate declined in the second half of the season, and in particular the search for a successor to Egyptian international Mohamed Salah is in full swing.
Former England defender Glen Johnson is sceptical that the former Everton forward can replace Egyptian King, saying it would be difficult for him to take over the position from Colombian winger Luis Diaz.
“I like Anthony Gordon as a player, but whether he is a replacement for Mo Salah, I’m not sure – they’re different types of players,”
“I like him as a player – he’s direct, he can get some assists and obviously goals too. The problem is that if he can’t play down the middle, I don’t think he’ll be ahead of Luis Díaz. Liverpool need players though, and if they can get him for a good deal, they should try and sign him.”

Even just a few left wingers are available in large numbers. In addition to Luis Diaz, Dutch winger Cody Gakpo and Portuguese winger Diogo Jota can play in the same position and no further acquisitions are necessary.
Ideally, the top priority is to secure a right winger, and a left winger is the most needed player profile. If someone were to leave the club, demand would increase, but at the moment this is an unlikely future.
Will an England winger ever play at Anfield in the future…?
